Leathered Skins, Unchained Hearts is a photographic project about the women of the African Heavy Metal scene in Botswana known as Marok. It is about the select few women who use the scene as a platform for self-expression, self-identity and free thought.

The Marok is predominantly male dominated, and the men have always been the voice of the scene. What interested me more, was the female narrative. It is much harder to be a female rocker in Botswana than it is to be a male rocker. Botswana society is religiously conservative and patriarchal and they expect their women to be submissive, decent, obedient and lady-like.
